World Cup 2006: Germany 4 – 2 Costa Rica June 10, 2006Posted by fukumimi in World Cup.
A good game to kick off the World Cup. Flowing play, and plenty of goals.
The German goals were all good goals, including Frings' long range effort which will probably be in the running for goal of the tournament. Lahm's opening effort was also a beauty, I don't think any goalkeeper could have prevented that one from going in, with the shot coming in from the corner of the penalty area and curling in at the top of the far corner.
Klose's two goals were both well taken, though one could argue that the defense were at fault for not closing down Klose, especially for the rebound for his second goal.
However, Germany's defense remains to be a big worry. Whilst undoubtedly strong in the air, they allowed two goals from Paulo Wanchope, with the offside trap sprung. The right back, Friedrich was slow to push up for the first goal, and the two giant central defenders looked slow. Lack of experience is probably a factor, the Mertesacker (a towering 196cm) being only 21.
Germany look like they will get through to the knock-out stages without much of a problem, but coming against teams who are not content to sit back and just wait for an opportunity to counterattack, their defense may be a bit too porous to proceed into the final stages of this year's tournament.
